How to style a matching set

The Hampton stripe set styled as a flat lay

A matching set is the shortest route to a finished outfit. You pull two pieces off the rail, you're done. But the reason a set earns its place isn't the days you wear it as-is — it's the weeks afterwards, when both halves quietly join the rest of your wardrobe.

Wear it as intended

Start with the set as it was designed. The Hampton Stripe Set and the Oxford Stripe Set both work this way: the stripe runs continuously from top to bottom, so the whole look reads as one long line. Keep accessories quiet — a pair of sunglasses and flat sandals is enough.

Split it up

This is where a set pays for itself. Take the top from the Multi Stripe Pop Set and put it with a plain skirt; take the shorts from the Cindy Set and wear them with an oversized hoodie. A print that felt bold as a full look becomes an easy separate once there's something plain next to it.

Layer over it

For cooler days, a set works as a base. The Piper Cardigan in Pinstripe over a striped set gives you two patterns in the same family, which reads considered rather than busy. Keep both patterns in one colour range and it holds together.

A note on prints

Stripes, polka dots and plaid all behave differently. Stripes lengthen and are the most forgiving to mix. Polka dots — the Pink & White Polka Dots Set, for instance — sit better as the only pattern in an outfit. Fruit and floral prints like the Berry Bananas Set are loud enough to be the whole point; let them be.
